"In one of the last days leading up the August recess, the Senate Judiciary Committee got into a heated clash over a controversial asylum bill. Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senator Lindsey Graham from South Carolina, refused to delay the bill any longer, after accusing Democrats of withholding a vote for 7-weeks. The bill, known as the Secure and Protect Act, requires that asylum seekers from Central America apply for asylum outside of the United States before applying here. Graham’s bill also extended the time that migrant families must be kept in detention centers from 20 days to 100 days, in order to help avoid immigration fraud."
