Why did the media hide this vital nugget so well?

 Because they wanted us to think the investigation and resultant report was impartial and not biased. Now we know Mueller barely had a clue about the direction, the biased attorneys on his team, the biased investigators, the omission of key investigative lines and witnesses and ultimately the generation of Volume II of the report that had no basis in law or facts.
